GC-VUV Applications: #1 Fuel Analysis

by | Nov 24, 2024 | technical articles, Energy & Fuels, Petrochemistry and Refining | 0 comments

Fuel analysis is complex and subject to many standards. As required, many analytical methods exist (GC-FID, GC valves, etc.) and sometimes coexist, making processing of results complex and time-consuming.

UNIONLAB, as a testing laboratory specializing in the analysis of fuels and petroleum products in general, regularly faces this problem.

Customer requests are becoming more specific as new regulations come into force on a regular basis. These developments require laboratories to adapt quickly and be equipped with the best analyzers.

UNIONLAB therefore consulted CHEMLYS for the analysis of petrol according to reference standard EN 228.

« Determination of saturated hydrocarbons (paraffinic, isoparaffinic and naphthenic), olefinic, aromatic and oxygenated in petrol for motor vehicles in accordance with European fuel specifications. »

UNIONLAB made the choice to trust CHEMLYS and its expertise to equip with a GC-VUV, the GC2030 Nexis of SHIMADZU coupled with the VUV detector, the VGA-100.

The GC-VUV is used to meet, among other things, the reference standard for gasoline analysis with NF EN 18015 or ASTM D8071. Either: Automotive fuels – Determination of hydrocarbon groups and selections of hydrocarbons and oxygen compounds.

Its innovative operation allows validation of the composition of 3D essences. This is a guarantee of reliability of the analysis results for customers.

2 Modes to adapt to your uses:

The GC-UVV has 2 modes for this type of need:

  • 1 production mode, dedicated to routine analysis, it follows the specifications of a standard.
  • 1 R&D mode that allows wider settings to sweep the VUV spectrum. This makes it possible to identify the families of compounds or even each compound present under the spectrum.

A true Swiss knife, it covers the needs of fuel analysis and the various oil matrices of UNIONLAB in production mode.

In addition, it allows for in-depth research on the detected compounds (R&D mode) when necessary.

The versatility and precision of the VUV sensor, the VGA-100, is a valuable help. Indeed, it allows changes in the analytical capabilities of UNIONLAB with a single analyser.

In this example in R&D mode, we can see the identification of various compounds present under the spectrum and the category to which they are associated.

This powerful tool allows countless possibilities in terms of reprocessing.

VUV software

The validation of the ASTM D8071 in NF EN 18015 confirmed the choice of UNIONLAB to expand their analytical fleet and to be able to accompany their customers on their most specific needs.
