GC-VUV applications : #1 Fuels analysis
Fuels analysis is a complex process, subject to numerous standards. Depending on requirements, numerous analytical methods exist (GC-FID, valves GC, etc.) and sometimes coexist, making the processing of results complex and time-consuming.
UNIONLAB, as a control laboratory specialized in fuels and petroleum products analysis in general, is regularly confronted with this problem.
Customer demands are becoming more and more specific, as new regulations come into force on a regular basis. These changes require laboratories to adapt quickly and to be equipped with the best analyzers.
UNIONLAB, therefore, consulted CHEMLYS for species analysis in accordance with the EN 228 reference standard:
“Determination of saturated (paraffinic, isoparaffinic and naphthenic), olefinic, aromatic and oxygenated hydrocarbons in gasoline for automotive engine complying with European fuel specifications.”
UNIONLAB chose CHEMLYS and its expertise to equip itself with a GC-VUV, i.e. SHIMADZU’s GC2030 Nexis coupled with the VGA-100 VUV detector.
Among other things, the GC-VUV meets the gasoline analysis reference standard NF EN 18015 or ASTM D8071. Known as: Automotive fuels – Determination of hydrocarbon groups and selections of hydrocarbons and oxygenates.
Its innovative technology makes it possible to validate the composition in 3D. This guarantees reliable fuels analysis results for customers.

Two modes to suit your needs:
The GC-VUV has two modes for this type of need:
- One production mode, dedicated to routine analysis, following standard specifications.
- One R&D mode, which allows wider settings to scan the VUV spectrum. This makes it possible to identify families of compounds, or even individual compounds, below the spectrum.
Thanks to its innovative functioning, it covers UNIONLAB’s fuels analysis needs and various petroleum matrices in production mode.
In addition, it enables in-depth research on detected compounds (R&D mode) when required.
The versatility and precision of the VGA-100 VUV detector are an invaluable aid. It enables UNIONLAB’s analysis capabilities to be upgraded with the same analyzer.
On this example in R&D mode, we can see the identification of various compounds present under the spectrum and the category to which they are associated.
This powerful tool opens up countless reprocessing possibilities.
Validation of ASTM D8071 to NF EN 18015 has confirmed UNIONLAB’s decision to expand its range of analytical instruments and support its customers’ most demanding needs.
